Composite products in WooCommerce product feeds

Selling build-your-own products with WooCommerce Composite Products? You might worry that these custom product types get skipped by your shopping feed, or that their price comes through wrong. The good news: Product Feed Pro supports composite products out of the box. Below covers how the integration works, what data ends up in your feed, and how to add a Global Unique ID (GTIN) to those products.

Prerequisites

RequirementDetails
Product Feed ProComposite products are exported by the core plugin. No add-on is needed to include them in a feed.
WooCommerce Composite ProductsThe official WooCommerce extension that creates composite product types. The plugin reads the composite price from it.
Product Feed EliteNeeded only for the Global Unique ID attribute in Field Mapping. Composite export itself works without it.
WooCommerce 9.2 or newerRequired only for automatic identifier fill. WooCommerce’s GTIN, UPC, EAN, or ISBN product field, which the feed reads, was added in WooCommerce 9.2.

How the composite products integration works

Product Feed Pro automatically detects composite products and exports each one as a separate item in your feed. It reads the product’s title, description, link, image, and your custom WooCommerce attributes the same way it does for a simple product. You don’t need to flatten your composites or rebuild them as separate simple products to get them into a feed.

The key difference is pricing. A composite product’s price depends on the components a shopper picks, so the plugin pulls the price straight from the WooCommerce Composite Products extension using its own pricing methods. The price, regular price, and sale price in your feed then match the base price shown on the product page. When a regular price and a lower current price both exist, the plugin sends the lower one as the sale price. The same logic covers WooCommerce Product Bundles.

The WooCommerce Composite Products extension must be active for pricing to calculate correctly. If it’s deactivated, the product isn’t recognized as a composite, and its price may be empty or wrong in the feed.

What composite product data appears in your feed

Composite products carry the same core fields as your other products:

  • Title, description, link, and image pulled from the product itself.
  • Price, regular price, and sale price are calculated from the composite base price.
  • Custom WooCommerce attributes you’ve added to the product.
  • GTIN fields from Yoast SEO (such as GTIN-8, GTIN-12, GTIN-13, and GTIN-14), if you use the Yoast WooCommerce SEO add-on. These appear as mappable values in the Value dropdown.

You map composite products to your channel’s attributes exactly like any other product, on the Field Mapping tab.

Add the Global Unique ID to your feed

Global Unique ID is a Product Feed attribute in Field Mapping. It sends a product’s identifier (GTIN, UPC, EAN, or ISBN) to your channel, which most shopping channels use to match your products to known items in their catalog. The value comes from WooCommerce’s own product field, labeled GTIN, UPC, EAN, or ISBN, and found under Product data > Inventory. WooCommerce stores that value internally as the product’s global unique ID, which is why the feed attribute carries that name. With Product Feed Elite active, you map this attribute to your channel through Field Mapping.

The Global Unique ID attribute only appears when Product Feed Elite is active. If you don’t see it in the Value dropdown, check that Elite is installed and activated.

To map it:

  1. Go to Product Feed in your WordPress admin menu.
  2. Open the feed you want to edit, or create a new one.
  3. Click the Field Mapping tab.
  4. Find your channel’s identifier attribute (for example, gtin or id) in the left column.
  5. In the Value dropdown next to it, select Global Unique ID (GTIN, UPC, EAN, or ISBN).
  6. Click Save Changes to store your mapping.
  7. Click Generate Product Feed to refresh the feed with the new value.

There’s also a Global Unique ID (GTIN, UPC, EAN, or ISBN) – Parent option. Use this when you want a variation to send its parent product’s identifier instead of its own.

Which products fill in automatically

As of Product Feed Elite 5.0.8, the Global Unique ID attribute fills in automatically for every product type WooCommerce stores an identifier on: simple, variable, composite, bundle, grouped, external, and subscription products. It reads WooCommerce’s GTIN, UPC, EAN, or ISBN field, set on each product under Product data > Inventory. A composite product’s identifier fills in on its own once you’ve entered it in that field, exactly like a simple product.

For a variation, the standard attribute reads the variation’s own GTIN, UPC, EAN, or ISBN field. The Parent option reads the value from the parent product and falls back to the parent automatically when the variation’s own field is empty.

Automatic fill needs WooCommerce 9.2 or newer, where the GTIN, UPC, EAN, or ISBN field was added. On older WooCommerce versions without that field, or when you want to override the stored value, set the identifier with a feed rule instead:

  • Set it with a feed rule: Use the Rules tab to assign a Global Unique ID value to your products. For detailed instructions, see How to Create Product Feed Rules.
  • Map a Yoast SEO GTIN field: If you use the Yoast WooCommerce SEO add-on, set a GTIN on the product and map that GTIN field in the Value dropdown instead.

Troubleshooting

The Global Unique ID attribute is missing from the Value dropdown
This attribute is part of Product Feed Elite. If you only run the free or Pro version, you won’t see it. Confirm that Product Feed Elite is installed and activated, then reload the Field Mapping tab.
My composite products show an empty Global Unique ID
First, enter an identifier in the composite product’s GTIN, UPC, EAN, or ISBN field, under Product data > Inventory in WooCommerce. With Product Feed Elite active, the Global Unique ID attribute fills in automatically from that field. If your WooCommerce version is older than 9.2 and doesn’t have that field, set the value with a rule on the Rules tab instead. See How to Create Product Feed Rules.
The field is blank even for simple products
Auto-fill needs WooCommerce 9.2 or newer, where the GTIN, UPC, EAN, or ISBN field was introduced. Update WooCommerce, then enter the identifier in each product’s GTIN, UPC, EAN, or ISBN field under Product data > Inventory, and regenerate the feed.
My channel rejects the feed with a GTIN error
The channel usually flags an identifier that’s missing or in the wrong format. For help fixing these, see How to Fix GTIN Errors in Google Merchant Center.

FAQ

Do composite products need the WooCommerce Composite Products extension to appear in my feed?
Yes. The plugin reads the composite price from that extension. Without it, the product won’t be recognized as a composite, and its pricing won’t be calculated correctly.
Does the feed list each part of a composite product separately?
No. A composite product appears as one item in your feed, using its own price, title, and image.
Can I send a GTIN for a composite product?
Yes. Enter it in the composite product’s GTIN, UPC, EAN, or ISBN field, under Product data > Inventory in WooCommerce. With Product Feed Elite active, the Global Unique ID attribute fills in automatically from that field, the same as it does for a simple product. On WooCommerce versions older than 9.2, set the value with a rule on the Rules tab instead.
What’s the difference between Global Unique ID and the Parent option?
The standard attribute sends the product’s own identifier. The Parent option sends the parent product’s identifier instead, which is useful for variations that share a code with their parent. For a variation, the Parent value fills in automatically when the variation’s own GTIN, UPC, EAN, or ISBN field is empty.
Is WPC Composite Products for WooCommerce (by WPClever) supported?
Not specifically. The composite pricing integration is built for the official WooCommerce Composite Products extension. WPC Composite Products by WPClever is a separate plugin, so its products aren’t handled as composites. If you use it, check your feed output and set the price or identifier with a rule on the Rules tab if those values don’t come through as expected.
